Pom, the head of a Native American tribe in Northern California, is figuring out how to use blockchain to resurrect the indigenous Chinook salmon species on which his society historically depended.
In order to achieve this, Pom and his team developed the video game Salmon Journeys on Decentraland. In it, players try to catch Chinook salmon in order to win a unique Non-fungible token (NFT) by Sawalmen, a Web3 organisation that represents Indigenous spiritual values and raises money for restoration projects and the land back movement.
The purpose of this game, according to Pom, is to raise awareness and money for true salmon restoration initiatives. The game is a component of an ongoing hackathon associated with the I.D.E.A.S. conference by CoinDesk.
"Salmon have not been able to return to their native waters in our original watershed near Mt. Shasta, California since the Shasta Dam was completed 75 years ago," Pom added.
He stated that he is in talks with Maori tribes in New Zealand to bring a kindred genetic offspring of the Chinook to California.
Pom, who also goes by the name Michael Preston in English, wants the team's NFTs to convey the significance of salmon restoration while also accurately reflecting the biological situation in Northern California.
Although he is not the only person working to fix the waterways, he said that other salmon pilot projects on the McCloud River have run into financial difficulties.
In March 2020, Pom had the initial concept for fusing blockchain with salmon restoration. He participated in Web3athon, a cryptocurrency hackathon organised by CoinDesk and the Crypto Research and Design Lab, earlier this year, and authored a rough draught of a white paper, or "Redpaper," as Pom puts it.
Pom and his team were able to launch their project thanks to the Web3athon and move it into areas where they hope to find more support and financing for Salmon Journey's full buildout.
He connected with his teammate Ayush Arora, an Indian software programmer who is essential to the creation of the video game Decentraland, through the Web3athon Discord community.
In order for people to learn about our initiatives, have fun playing a fun game, win and get value for themselves, and promote actual salmon returns to the McCloud River, Pom explained that the purpose of the game was to communicate our narrative in as many metaverses as possible.
Pom believes that as a competitor in the Web3athon, he has a decent minimum-viable product and a good chance of winning.
"We are tenacious and confident in our efforts. Whether or if we participate in the hackathon, we will still proceed with this "said Pom.
